During his two and a half hour presentation at Wings Stadium, the pet behavior guru explained that a dog and its behavior can benefit from positive human energy (i.e. consistent discipline, calmness, & an active lifestyle). However, a dog living in a more sporadic household, like "with a 'Jersey Shore' group," could experience developmental problems, according to the Animal Planet star. Cesar Millan's style of training focuses on establishing dominance as a pack leader. He was admittedly amazed when he came to the United States to find unruly dogs jumping on couches and being referred to by owners as their children.
In addition to ensuring that a dog sees its owner as pack leader, it is important that owners rely on a reward based approach to training. According to Lisa Moore, a pet column writer for the Modesto Bee, dogs benefit when they have goals to shoot for, rather than punishments to dodge. Focusing on the case of Farley, a Standard Schnauzer who pulls its female owner on walks and never makes eye contact, dominant and punishment based approaches were not cutting it. While the owner's husband could maintain this kind of leash tug-of-war, June, his wife, decided to take Lisa's advice. Toys, food, and playtime all became regulated, with June as the regulator. Simple commands became a routine, and soon Farley's walk behavior changed. Now, Farley checks with June for cues as to what she expects.
