Destinations

Pets in transit are subject to both destination-specific restrictions and airline-specific restrictions. Almost all of the details below concern time sensitive document preparation and veterinary work. Do not rely on this page to plan your own pet move, as none of the following information on this page is guaranteed to be accurate***(see below).  What follows are some destination-specific regulations that must be adhered to in different countries.

Australia

The “land of the long weekend” may not deserve its popular nickname, as it has become a popular destination for hard working expatriates across a multitude of industries. Due to the fact that rabies among terrestrial animals in AU is rare or non-exisent, the requirements for entry of immigrating pets are quite stringent. Since all pets bound for Australia from the US must depart out of SFO or LAX, pet owners must conform to the restrictions of cargo airlines and USDA veterinarians servicing these two airports. To depart from the US to AU, cargo airlines and port veterinarians (LA) will only work with USDA-licensed pet service companies. In order to have your pet travel to Australia, you can expect the following process: (pic - USA TODAY)

  • International Microchip – blood sample
  • Full Vaccination – DHLPP, Rabies, Canine Influenza Vac. (all are time sensitive)
  • Rabies Antibody Titre Test
  • Import Permit* – Pre-arrival Quarantine Reservations & Payment to Quarantine Facility Direct**
  • Brucellosis Test – dogs only
  • Ehrlichiosis Test – dogs only
  • Leptospriosis Test – dogs only
  • Leishmaniosis Test – dogs only
  • Parasite Treatments (Internal & External)
  • Veterinary Exam (for export)
  • Health Certificate
  • USDA Endorsement
  • USDA Crate Sealing
  • Quarantine Period – Both pre-travel and post-travel

*PPR recommends that the pet owner completes the AU Import Permit.

*PPR can complete the AU Import Permit for an additional fee.

**PPR requires that the pet owner make a direct payment to the quarantine facility of their choosing during the appropriate phase.

**PPR requires that the pet owner establishes quarantine arrangements, which can be made at one of the AQIS facilities below:

New Zealand

“God’s Own Country” shares much of the same requirements as its Aussie neighbor to the west, with a few exceptions. Most notably, the amount of time required for post travel quarantine is considerably less at 10 days. Also, there are obviously different quarantine facilities.

Also, like with Australia, PPR recommends that the pet owner completes the NZ Import Permit. PPR can provide this service for an additional fee. PPR requires that the pet owner establishes quarantine arrangements, which can be made at one of four facilities:

Mangatawhiri - Pet Haven Quarantine Services

Takanini - Qualified Pet Services

Christchurch - Canterbury Quarantine Services

Levin - Shado-Lans Quarantine Facility
